POET ZERO (aka MAXIM ENGL) of EPHEMEROL fame doing a solo acoustic radio concert, broadcast 09-17-2002 on "VANILLE CLUB", RADIO X, Frankfurt a. M., Germany, performing songs from his solo repertoire as well as his former bands/projects THE JANITORS OF LUNACY, ORANGE, SPACE TRUCKIN' and PAN AMP.

This is an edited version of the broadcast, because some cover versions of songs by TIM BUCKLEY, NICK DRAKE and BLACK SABBATH, that POET ZERO 

also performed on that day, had to be left out for copyright reasons...

The highlights probably "Stanley Kubrick's Diaries" (compare to the electric version by the JANITORS OF LUNACY here) and "Magic Spell" (also performed many times live by ORANGE). At the end of "Magic Spell" you can hear a quote from "Neil's Elevator", which fits in here perfectly...

RE-UP: Orange - Open Air Flörsheim 1995 (GER)

Another Re-up of some stuff by the German Psychedelic grunge/experimental band ORANGE.
Here you'll have the chance to hear the music of their 2nd demo IN THE GARDEN OF THE DEMON KING (see below) live. Enjoy!

ORANGE live at the Open Air Festival Flörsheim, 07-28-1995. This is the complete gig.

Has probably the longest version of "NEIL'S ELEVATOR". There's a small cut at around 22.50 min, but it is hardly noticeable. "Souldrive" is – like in the most versions at that time – included (23.34 until 28.47).

This version here was dedicated to the Frankfurt avantgarde, impro experimental band LAY DE FEAR,that also included MEMBER at that time, a friend of the band and now - together with STOLLE - the heart of the emptyblaukraut-blog. (Read the comment in the original post to learn more about LAY DE FEAR and its side projects.)

You can hear Denner, the drummer and occasional singer and guitarist of ORANGE, mumbling "lay de fear... lay de fear" at some point (at 14.34) in the middle of the free form freak-out part of "Elevator" (starting at 10.58). Also you may notice the beginning of SUPER KING & THE FIRE ACTION's song "Breathing Soft 'n' Slow" shortly later... (at 15.26).

Suse surely must have been very hungry on that day, 'cause in the surrealistic spoken passage she raves about eating and food all the time. e.g. a cake baken by squirrels or apples from an apple tree...

The free form freak-out part has never again sounded so far out, reminding of the strangest GRATEFUL DEAD space explorations, mixed with early krautrock noise improvisations... A true listening adventure!

ORANGE played as the opening act at the two day Festival nearby Mainz and Frankfurt a. M., which also featured the old krautrock veterans GURU GURU – not an easy task to do, but they did quite well and also returned to play "Idiot in Bed" as an unplanned encore. This version here is a very good example of how ORANGE always changed their songs in order to keep the material fresh to themselves and their audience. Watch out for the improvised middle part of the song after the line "Now I'm on my way..." (at 4.18), that demonstrates the rush of the drug hitting the character of the song...

RE-UP: Catasto Elettrico - Gas (IT 2007?)

CATASTO ELETTRICO is an improvisational Italian band, that retired from playing live to concentrate on recording improvised sessions very much in a jazzy progressive style (with some indie influences). This session here, "GAS", reminds me a little bit of TORTOISE in some aspects and very much of the early SOFT MACHINE (just listen to that fuzz bass!), which is meant as a BIG compliment of course.

Catasto Elettrico - Infinite (2009)

No need to introduce those guys to you regular blog readers, since they were with us almost right from the beginning and are also featured on the 1st and 2nd HLFP-Samplers.

If improvised Canterbury Prog-Jazz-Rock and electric MILES-DAVIS-Fusion-Jazz is the thing for you, you need search no further.

This is already CATASTO ELETTRICO's eights web release, and all of them are well worth checking out. You will find some of them here on this blog, or you may visit the band's website, where all they ever did is posted for your enjoyment for free download.

Though "Infinite" is not my favourite CATASTO ELETTRICO release ("Radio" is), it is nevertheless a fantastic record. The first two tracks are more in the electric Miles or WEATHER REPORT mode, while the last song is more in an uptempo electronic style and a little bit less relaxed. Enjoy!

Love Happening - The story of Charlotte & Magon

"Charlotte (France) and Magon (Israel), met in 2006. At the end of 2007, after Magon reached a nice success in his country with his first auto produced EP, he invited Charlotte to create, without any doubts, an "authentically and marvelous" pop album in 12 days, in his parents house. Charlotte, curious and instinctive, took a flight and met Magon in March 2008 in Ben Gurion Airport.
They composed 9 songs and felt deeply in love. Their love became the core of their songs and brought to their music a timeless universality. They called their album "Love Happening" because that is what happened and still is. (...) Alexis Dew, the manager of Charlotte & Magon, sent me a mail and asked me to review this album. Since "Love Happening" is a relatively new album release (and available on iTunes/emusic/amazon....) we decided to only choose some tracks as a kind of appetizer for the album. If you like what you hear, PLEASE SUPPORT THE ARTISTS AND BUY THEIR ALBUM...

When I read the info text I have to admit I was very sceptical at first, to say the least... I mean: a boy-meets-girl-story, they make music together and fall in love... c'mon, man, don't give me that crap... Kitschy romanticism used to sell records, how new is that to you? - hello, Mr. Gainsbourg, hello Mrs. Birkin...
But I have to say: I was wrong! This really is a great record! It's very well produced, the compositions and the arrangements are excellent, and Charlotte's voice is really quite impressive, haunting, sometimes reminding of a young KATE BUSH or ALISON GOLDFRAPP. Ok, there is some soulful 'love whispering' on one or two tracks, that I could live without, but on the other hand it's not that bad - in fact it doesn't harm the music, as it could have done, if it was recorded by less talented musicians...

I wouldn't go as far as calling "Love Happening" a psychedelic pop masterpiece, but then: which record is?, and "Love Happening"... well, ... it comes quite close to that...

Bill Rogers - In The Land Of The Pleasure Seekers (USA 2008)

In October I posted a song collection by this very talented song writer/musician named BILL ROGERS, who is also featured with one great neo psych track ("When The Clock Strikes 13") on the last homemade-lofi-psych Sampler NEW KIDS ON THE BLOG (HLFP 03). Here is a complete album, called "In The Land Of The Pleasure Seekers", that Bill recorded last year.

Now that I've found the time for repeated listening a small review:

Nice work, very listenable. I especially like the "House of Turkish Delights" track as well as the vocoder sounds and the spoken word passages (though the 2nd track is a little bit too much dancefloor for me).

All things considered I'd say: solid work, but I'd love to hear some more adventurous, experimental, some more "far out" parts - a little bit too much "mainstream" for my taste... But don't get me wrong, I still like that music a lot. And very nice artwork and a good production b.t.w.

Ghosts Inc. - Sounds From The Attic (v. 1.0) (CAN 2008)

I'm no expert for electronic music, but I like what I like and this one here I like for sure - atmospheric dreamy soundscape music. Recommended!

"GHOSTS INC. (from Ontario, Canada) was formed in 2007 by Steve Engler, Norbert Croonenberg and Mikael Hansson. The three members bring a variety of musical backgrounds and influences ranging from DAVID SYLVIAN to TUXEDOMOON by way of THE RESIDENTS, MILES DAVIS and CABARET VOLTAIRE - and channel this together on a variety of hardware and software platforms.

GHOSTS INC. completed their first release, "Sounds from the attic", in the summer of 2008. The six tracks started as experimentations with electronic voice patterns (EVPs) and over the course of several months of collaboration coalesced into their current shape, which best can be described as a debate on whether ghosts may be nothing more than mirror sightings of our own souls; the realworld projection of inner struggles. The purpose of this sampler (and this blog) is to show how many great unrecognized very creative bands/artists are out there in the WWW – bands that are doing their own thing, unimpressed by the mainstream plastic pop world ...

I hope that at least some of those musicians will get the recognition they deserve ... at least in the digital world.

Since I started homemade-lofi-psych in January this year there were 137 posts; nearly 60 different bands/musicians were introduced to you blog readers.

HLFP 03 may serve as an appetizer. It features some of my personal favourite tracks by musicians, that were featured on this blog since I posted the last HLFP sampler...

(HLFP 02 "EMBRYO THOUGHTS" – though there is one exception: dANIL, who nevertheless is featured under another name on this blog as solo artist and band member of ORANGE, SUPER KING AND THE FIRE ACTION and CAPTAIN FARTFISH AND HIS CAREFUL MUFFINS)

... and that are NOT yet featured on the first two samplers. Therefore the title: "NEW KIDS ON THE BLOG".

Whoever will download HLFP 03 has the chance to come to know those bands and listen to one of their songs – and if he likes what he hears he may check out the original post with the complete album that song is taken from...

Bill Rogers - Song collection (US ca. 2008)

Here's a collection of songs of yet another very talented song writer, who wants to share his music with us.

BILL ROGERS from Huntington, Vermont, USA, has been recording his own songs for 10+ years and playing in bands for more than that. He now is a member of the sunshine pop band RAQUEL'S BOYS as well as a solo artist in his own right. Bill's latest albums are available at CD BABY (PLEASE SUPPORT THE ARTISTS, IF YOU LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR!).

"My sound is a boiled down synthesis of hundreds of 60's Sunshine pop, Folk Rock, Psychedelic, and Garage bands I've loved over the years. My sound ranges in emotion from jubilant BEACH BOYS style pop to moody, misty ballads to the guitar driven, mind bending, psychedelic!" (B. R.) 

A near perfect description of Bill's music, I'd say. One can clearly detect traces of bands like GANDALF, SAGITTARIUS, THE BYRDS, turned on BEATLES or THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK as well as of harder, more guitar driven bands like THE PRETTY THINGS. Very well done, very cool stuff!

We're Late For Class - # 30: The Jim Morrison Seance Tapes (USA, March 2008)

 

"We're not sure how the idea hatched but we know the concept doesn't need much of a set up... it's a live space improvisation during a Jim Morrison seance. Why not!? It's cheaper than a living singer (classified ads, lodging, alcohol) and besides... you know how lead singers are to deal with. Since Bono isn't dead yet, we thought, who better than poet/philosopher/comedian Jim Morrison? And so you don't think this is just something we slapped together with old recordings and ProTools, listen for yourself as the engineer asks Jim for the "post-death stuff... the stuff without copyrights." For those that don't buy the premise, we've included a bonus, 14-minute instrumental mix (minus Jim) from when it was called "Message From Fornax" for a few hours. In the end, Jimbo was fun, even if he did sound like he was drunk in Paris. It went smoother than our Screamin' Jay Hawkins seance, anyway. CRANK THE VOLUME of the MP3 player and listen to it all. Recorded March 15-16, 2008."
