"There is so much great music here..." WHERE TO START???

I recommend to
start with the HLFP-Samplers (especially HLFP 04).
Here you will come to know many of the bands/musicians featured in this blog. If you like what you hear, you may check out more of their music later on.
(You may also click on the picture on the sidebar and you will find the original post with download links.)

There is also a "FOCUS ON..." section. Here you will find albums that imo are absolutely great (***** = "five-stars-recordings") and that are essential listening and strongly recommended for download.

I TRY to RE-UP some stuff that has been down from time to

time, but I still don't have enough time to

listen to/post much new stuff.

Jared Fairfield - Fairer Fields (USA 2009)

'Similar to "Boiling Atom" '.

(J. F.)

Maybe a little bit more adventurous regarding the arrangements and instrumentation.

Favourite track: 'Flower', 'Time'

Jared Fairfield - The Great Boiling Atom (USA 2009)

JARED FAIRFIELD originally is from Maine and currently is living in Maine.

"I regard my music as still being very amateur and not fully evolved. I have a vague vision of what my ideal music would be, and I am still far off from it. I have come a ways though. – It would be impossible to list all the influences, but specifically while recording this (= "Past Songs"): Tyrannosaurus Rex, Gary Higgins, Syd Barrett, Love, Vashti Bunyan, Tiny Tim, among many others." (J. F.)

Jared himself describes "The Great Boiling Atom" as slightly less coherent (than "Past Songs") with more experiments in sound and in recording. I especially like the keyboard sound on "Conch" and "Ground". Listening to "The Great Boiling Atom" I especially hear a strong early Marc Bolan / Tyrannosaurus Rex influence (e.g. on "Ground" and "Queen"). Again some tracks are recorded quite lo-fi.

Only thing I have to criticise is the fact, that most of the tracks are very short and somehow rather sketchy. Some more polishing here and there would probably have made out of some already very good songs some really, really GREAT songs...

Favourite track: "Conch"

Jared Fairfield - Past Songs (USA 2008)

"Past Songs" was recorded early 2008 by JARED FAIRFIELD when he was living in Las Vegas.

"Mostly working within a folk-type realm."

Well, don't expect any simple folk songs here. Most of the tracks here are somehow unusual, have some unexpected twist, most of all one of my favourite songs, the opener 'Child' - the most experimental and psychedelic track of this song collection.
Solid playing throughout, though some songs are recorded indeed rather lo-fi (e.g. 'Nosey Moses') - well worth exploring! Enjoy!

Favourite tracks: 'Child' and 'Cheap and Shmaltzy'

RE-UP: ephemeroL - ephemeroL (GER 2006)

The first album from German experimental/noise/drone band ePHEMEROL from Frankfurt a. M.
Their second brand new album "plenK!" is now available in very limited quantities (contact e-mail see inlet artwork). You'll also find a version of one track from the new album on the 2nd HLFP Sampler "Embryo Thoughts".

"we are using minimal electronic music, free improvisation and early industrial music to create something altogether new. Repetition and frozen chords are as important and valuable as free material or rock music."

RE-UP: ephemeroL - Live Performance, Das Bett, 04-11-2006 (GER)

Maxim Engl

RE-POST of the rare recording of EPHEMEROL from Frankfurt a. M. from April 11th 2006.
This live performance from "Das Bett" sounds very different to the more post rock/drone oriented tracks from the EP I posted some time ago and also to the very noisy track from the HLFP 02-Sampler "EMBRYO THOUGHTS".
It starts rather silently in a meditative mood and then slowly builds up to get a little louder (but never too loud) and more weird as the journey travels on - improvised from start til end.

ephemeroL - Die Halle, Frankfurt 02-21-2009 (GER)

One of the rare live recordings of the german avantgarde/noise/drone band EPHEMEROL, heavily influenced by SUNNO))), BORIS and the like. Starts rather quiet (with some guitar lines not too dissimilar to Maxim Engl's later work with his former psychedelic grunge band ORANGE), but gets much louder and heavier and more minimalistic with time. Read more here!
Enjoy! More live stuff to come.

Sadhu Sadhu - Live at the Hideout (USA 2009)

SADHU SADHU is a heavy psych trio from Chicago, Illinois, USA. "Live at the Hideout" is the second cassette/tape release by the band, that is in the studio these days to record their first album.

"We've gotten compared to bands like: Acid Mothers, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Can, Loop."

(Jim from Sadhu Sadhu)

And quite rightly so...

Though the sound quality of these recordings isn't the best (sounds like a 1970s bootleg) the music is absolutely convincing. Lots of wah wah guitar, strong bass lines, tight playing.

Archipelago - Professional Talking (USA 2009)

"Ours is a three-piece. I go by Stitch and I play a sp404, a kp2, couple other delay pedals. I sing sometimes and play the sax and sometimes keys. Leif David sings and uses an akai headrush e2, a 2 second digitech delay, and some other delays on his vocals. 'Hogroast' Y. Land plays guitar through a whole mess of things that change depending on whats working at the moment. Again, lots of delay on him too. --- The recordings (...) are live takes recorded into my macbook via the internal mic, all done within in the past month. Leif and I have been playing around for a year or so and were joined by mr. land in July. --- We will soon be releasing our material on cassette through the Portland, Oregon label 'Gnar Tapes & Shit'. They are sincerely rad dudes. --- Leif and I previously played together in a band called Gratitillium. We also play folk tunes (he plays banjo and I play clarinet). --- We think of Archipelago as noise. Sub-categorization could go on (pointlessly) forever. Our musical influences are varied to the extent that grouping our sound with any influence would be a convolution to the understanding our music. We encourage anyone to listen and make genre assumptions for themselves. That is a main reason we decided to release this free over the internet. --- Personally, a main influence is the notion of 'derangement of the senses', cultivated and sought after by Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, and generations of noise musicians to follow. Brion Gysin's noise experiments set the wheels in motion for me to be able to make this type of music. --- http://www.myspace.com/archipelagopdx has some other stuff to enjoy." (S. H.)

ARCHIPELAGO are from Portland, Oregon, USA.

I think their music could best be described as psychedelic noise rock, though the 'noise' on tracks like 'tubes issued' e.g. is rather some kind of 'beautiful noise'. Excellent production, very clear sounding. Enjoy!

Endless Endless Endless – Black Talisman (USA 2009)

James Tichenor from the New York/Jersey post-noise duo ENDLESS ENDLESS ENDLESS sent me a mail and asked me to post their first release 'Black Talisman'. Here is James' description of it:

"Black Talisman is the debut recording from the New York/Jersey duo of Brett Renfer (Brooklyn: guitar, vocals, and pedals) and James Tichenor (Jersey: Korg Gameboy DS). Splitting their time between triumphant post-noise and stretched out bummer-wave, Endless Endless Endless creates music from the sounds of shimmering guitars, squiggly synth lines, filter sweep synth washes, slow-mo 8-bit drums, and infinite layered vocal harmonies all mushed together into a psychedelic, blissed-out smoothie. With no overdubs and minimal editing, Black Talisman captures Endless Endless Endless riffing as songs and ideas build, blur, loop and die. This is music for (and from) pretzel rods and Miller highlife.
Hand-made, numbered edition of 100 (53 tapes) (47 cdrs) comes with large laser etched Talisman and (secret) mp3 download link. Wear the Talisman and it will bring you infinite power." (J. T.)

Truely amazing, quite unique piece of music! Spacy guitar accompanied by gameboyDS electronic sounds – very comfortable and relaxing listening experience, though there's lots of distortion...

Strongly recommended!

Devin Hollows - Shit Songs (2009)

From Farmington Hills, Michigan, comes DEVIN HOLLOWS (aka Devin Madgy). He records gentle psychedelic/experimental homemade pop songs using his 4-track or directly in his computer. If you like bands like A. R. KANE you definitely should have a listen.

"(...) I just wanted people to hear something they don't hear quite often." ...

Q: How'd you "label" your music?

A: It sways between experimental, folk, lofi. Not real sure. My good friend calls it "humble spirit music".

Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...

A: The Earth is hollow and we are on our way to becoming 4-dimensional!"

Cool Band Now - logan bean: the ep + better ingredients, better pizza. cool band now, (USA 2008/2009)

COOL BAND NOW is a 4-track cassette lo-fi freak pop/rock project from Santa Cruz, CA, USA.

"the premise began a while ago when my old friend nick green and i proposed doing a series of very short, on-the-spot minisongs -- sometimes no longer than a hook or a chorus, and always recorded onto our tascam 4-tracks. within a few months, we had produced so many songs that we decided to compile a selection of them into two records: an ep, logan bean: the ep, (named after our mutual friend, who we assumed would be the only person to ever listen to it) and a full-length lp, better ingredients. better pizza. cool band now,
(...) give them a listen. they are fucked up. i think you will like them!"
(email-info by Chris Hopkins)

Q: When recorded?
A: The majority of the tracks was recorded in 2009, but some pieces are from 2008 and earlier.
Q: Who involved? Who played what?
A: Nick Green, Chris Hopkins, Ken Kouot, and Logan Bean all played guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and synth.
Q: Any more releases?
A: There are tapes and tapes of unreleased music, although here is a quick b-side called "$tarbuck$ $huffle" http://critical-hit.org/mp3/starbucks_shuffle.mp3
Q: Since when does this band/project exist (are you into music)?
A: Hm, well, nick and i had the idea of doing a "tv commercial break" band years ago, where we would just string together extremely short little miniature songs as if one were channel-surfing. eventually we both acquired 4-track cassette recorders, and started recording soon afterwards.
Q: Any previous bands worth mentioning?
A: Previously nick and i were in a melodramatic indie band called "we carry thy banner." then nick played with "birds fled from me", and i played with "you can do it, old boy". we are both in an electro group called "bro montana". occasionally we do improvised ambience as "pc load letter", and we were in a short-lived grind band called "anti-difranco". that's a lot of different band names, i know, but for whatever reason we get tired of them really quickly. that's why i like the name "cool band now", because i just don't even want to think about it any more.
Q: How'd you "label" your music?
A: Pop Rock. (??? - mike-floyd -)
Q: Influences?
A: Guided By Voices... they were the biggest inspiration on this band. listening to Bob Pollard is like sitting in on lectures with a Professor of Rock & Roll (appropriately, Bob was a school teacher for many years before GBV started rocking).
Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...
A: The technological singularity. if you are unfamiliar with it, google it up and get into it. i think you could say "cool band now," is heavily inspired by the theory. (the last track on 'better ingredients' is called "singularity now!").

Absolutely amazing band! I love that cheapo 4-track collage approach to making music; this is really lo-fi and it's fantastic! Here you'll find more musical ideas in 2 minutes than you'll find when listening 2 hours to your average rock radio station!
Most of the songs/fragments could be described as indie rock, and the GUIDED BY VOICES influence is clearly audible, but there are also pieces of hardcore, some samples and indescribable fragments of surrealistic absurdity and soundpainting. One time the vocals even remind me of JACK BRUCE of CREAM fame... And on 'BIBPCBN' every now and then a distorted, disoriented 'Cortez' shimmers through...
You'll also get $tarbuck$ $huffle as a bonus, and that one could best be described as hip-hop in the style of the BEASTIE BOYS! I promise, you won't be bored!

Check this band out, if you're into lo-fi experimental indie music, and you won't be disappointed! Great stuff!
