Glaze of Cathexis' "The Visions Surround You" was one of the first albums I ever downloaded from this blog. Regardless of the tunnel vision of pop culture, psychedelic rock is not confined to the 1960's, nor need it overtly reference it. In the case of Glaze of Cathexis, the 1980's seem more relevant - specifically, the more psychedelically-inclined post-punk British rockers of that decade, such as The Teardrop Explodes/Julian Cope, XTC and Echo and the Bunnymen. It's in the drum machines, it's in the synthesizers, it's in the vocals, and it's positively fab.
"Cloud Machine" offers more fine specimens of the same, but also throws us a few fascinating curveballs of Americana, including a couple of acoustic numbers and a tune with an Eno-era Talking Heads kinda groove.
That's just what I got from my first listening. If "The Visions Surround You" is any indication, I'll be listening to "Cloud Machine" a lot in my near future!
Thanks for the review! The most helpful critiques are of course unsolicited. I never quite picked up on the XTC vibe in my own music. In fact I used to listen to astonishing amounts of them, but I had a falling out with Andy Partridge's voice a few years back and haven't given them a listen recently. I think a bit of the 80's vibes are also out of necessity. I'm a competent drummer, but I have no easy way to record live drums; hence the electronic ones. My typical philosophy with drum programming is to highlight and make the most of the electronic aspects of the sound since they'll just just come out fake if you try and program digitally organic sounds.
