HOMEMADE LOFI PSYCH --- WHERE TO START?

"There is so much great music here..." WHERE TO START???

I recommend to
start with the HLFP-Samplers (especially HLFP 04).
Here you will come to know many of the bands/musicians featured in this blog. If you like what you hear, you may check out more of their music later on.
(You may also click on the picture on the sidebar and you will find the original post with download links.)

There is also a "FOCUS ON..." section. Here you will find albums that imo are absolutely great (***** = "five-stars-recordings") and that are essential listening and strongly recommended for download.

I TRY to RE-UP some stuff that has been down from time to

time, but I still don't have enough time to

listen to/post much new stuff.

Sorry!

FINGERLESS: 5:18 (AUSTRALIA 2011)

'5:18' is Fingerless’ debut release from 2011. The second album ‘Organ Control’ was released in 2012. The intervening years passed without comment. A new EP will be released soon.

""Hey Mr. Tambourine men play some backwards guitar for me." This would sum up Brisbane based Marc Cheeseman's music... partly. Good seventies influenced acid folk songs, where acid is the backward electric guitar, some reverbed flutes and soundeffects wrapped around great timeless bedroom folk music with some strong moments.” — Dying For Bad Music

“Two thumbs!” — J. Milgate

“I tried to listen to this on acid and all I could picture was your stupid face.” — M. Fresta

The 2011 album “5:18” is available here for free download:

RECOMMENDED!
Excellent dreamy psychedelic folk complete with some slide, some fuzz and some backward guitars, lots of reverb and far out vocals!

REPOST by Request: POET ZERO (Orange, Ephemerol...) - Vanille Club, Radio X (GER. 2002)

POET ZERO (aka MAXIM ENGL) of EPHEMEROL fame doing a solo acoustic radio concert, broadcast 09-17-2002 on "VANILLE CLUB", RADIO X, Frankfurt a. M., Germany, performing songs from his solo repertoire as well as his former bands/projects THE JANITORS OF LUNACY, ORANGE, SPACE TRUCKIN' and PAN AMP.
This is an edited version of the broadcast, because some cover versions of songs by TIM BUCKLEY, NICK DRAKE and BLACK SABBATH, that POET ZERO
also performed on that day, had to be left out for copyright reasons...

The highlights probably "Stanley Kubrick's Diaries" (compare to the electric version by the JANITORS OF LUNACY here) and "Magic Spell" (also performed many times live by ORANGE). At the end of "Magic Spell" you can hear a quote from "Neil's Elevator", which fits in here perfectly...
Enjoy!

RE-POST: Paneye - Wilt and Loom (AUSTRALIA 2009)

"Wilt and Loom" is a fantastic record!!!

The man behind the one-man project
PANEYE is Will Treffry, and he is from Summer Hill near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
PANEYE's music could be described as a mixture of electronic, ambient, psych folk and indie dream pop.

Regular blog readers will certainly already be familiar with Will Treffry's music recorded under the name PANEYE as well as BRIRSTLES ON THE CARAPACE. In fact he is one of my favourite musicians featured here on HLFP.

Dive into his dreamscapes and enjoy!

Strongly recommended!

PANEYE is also featured on HLFP 04 SOUND EXPLOSIONS

Favourite track: The whole thing! Well, maybe "Misery Portholes", which sounds especially great to my ears.

Jim Guittard - Rise (USA 2010)

JIM GUITTARD should be no stranger to you, since I already posted a couple of his albums on HLFP in May (look here).

"Rise" is his latest musical adventure and again a very fine album, 60's inspired psych-folk with some more or less political statements interspersed giving you something to think about... And of course you'll also hear those late sixties experimental BYRDS vibes again. Probably JIM's finest album - until now.

Recommended!

"The "Rise" album is a set of songs, that I hope, capture the times in which we live. At the heart of it all is the message to stay true and be happy amongst the chaos in the world that is often pushed at us through the propaganda lense of the media. - The songs were done in a rough do-it-yourself lo-fi Psychedelic folk-freak way because this is what I do. Some of the songs were rather improvised especially with the lyric.
"Rise Up America" was written just about the time of the G20 summit in Pittsburg in September 2009. It is meant to be a sort of wake up call for Americans and also people around the world. It has already been recorded by an artist in Italy.
The album was recorded on my 8-Track Tascam machine in Portland, Oregon, Dallas, Texas, and Sofia, Bulgaria.
Credits:
Jim Guittard: Lead and background vocals, electric lead and rhythm guitars, acoustic 12-string guitar, bass, shakers, percussion, drums, keyboard, and effects.
My wife helped out on the vocal for Roller Coaster Ride."
(J. G.)

Favourite track: Hit the Sky, Independence

Moonwood - Aubade (CAN 2009)

MOONWOOD is an acid folk project by Canadian Jakob Rehlinger, who is also a member of the experimental noise trio NEW YAKI.

Aubade is a very fine improvised instrumental loose psychedelic folk record that creates an atmosphere of awe and mysticism.
Excellent!

Q: Where exactly are you from?
A: I am from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. But now I live in Toronto.
Q: Do you want your real name mentioned? If so: What is your real name?
A: My real name is Jakob Rehlinger.
Q: How recorded?
A: This album was recorded on a 16 track digital recorder in my living room. Though I suppose a lot of the actual "recording" was done within a looper pedal. Also because I was using the looper pedal to layer improviations live, each song only uses maybe four or five of the recorder's 16 tracks.
Q: When recorded?
A: Late spring of 2009, I believe.
Q: Who involved? Who played what?
A: I played all the instruments. This album is pretty acoustic guitar heavy.
Q: Any more releases? Any "official" releases?
A: I recorded 11 Moonwood CDs under the name Babel in 2007. The best of that material is collected on a Moonwood CD called "Forest Ghosts". That's also available through my label Arachnidiscs.
Q: Since when does this project exist?
A: This project evolved out of one of my other projects, Babel which I'd be working on since 1999. Babel started out as a sound-collage project with elements of minimalist composition. Eventually my interest in improvised psyche music started bleeding into that project until I decided a name change was in order to reflect the change in direction. Then Moonwood was born somewhere in 2008/09. - Ironically there's a new Babel CD coming out in the next month.
Q: Any previous bands worth mentioning?
A: Not previous bands but I'm currently in a trio called New Yaki with Stephen Wolf (Partli Cloudi) and Andrew MacGregor (Gown/The Bark Haze). Though we live in three distant cities and that makes it hard to be productive. A few different labels have put out cassettes by New Yaki.
Q: How'd you "label" your music? (I know... nobody wants to get labeled... bla bla bla...)
A: Psyche, free-psyche, improv, acid-folk. All the usual labels that apply to this kind of thing.
Q: Influences?
A: I have to admit I hear a lot of Six Organs of Admittance in this one. Though I'm not sure I'd ever say he's a a direct influence. The really early Pink Floyd (pre-Piper at the Gates of Dawn) is a big influence on everything I do. As is King Crimson. I suppose Espers, Pocahaunted, all the usual suspects. I really like a lot of the stuff on Digitalis.
Q: Website, Myspace?
Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...
A: There's a new Moonwood album called "Coal Aberrations" which is almost ready. It features several other people for the first time. Ameen from Healthy Animal, Stephen and Andrew again. Cellos, horns and flutes, oh my. I'm pretty excited about it. It's the whole being greater than the sum of the parts thing. I'm fairly proud of "Aubade", but I think the new album is that much better because of everyone else's contributions.

Here is a video for hey judas, don't let me down from the new album "Coal Abberations":

- Oh one more thing: The physical release of "Aubade" comes with a DVD of Moonwood films.

Dan Lawrence - Nameless EP (USA 2009)

DAN LAWRENCE from Newton, MA, sent me his ep "Nameless" to post it for your pleasure. It's a mixture of psychedelic folk/pop, acoustic guitar playing with some added electronics and a remarkable voice that you may need to get used to at first listen.
Quite interesting... Would like to hear more.

Here we go:

"I recorded it through a tape player directly into my Macbook. It was recorded over a period of two weeks during the summer of 2009. I played all the parts myself. This was my first EP since my 2008 debut LP entitled 'Stay' which is largely sample based and not readily available online at this point in time. I am currently working on a new full length LP entitled 'Predator Instincts' which will probably be released sometime this coming summer. I have played around in several bands before on multiple instruments but currently record and write music by myself. I'd label this EP as experimental pop/psychedelic, however, I like to explore many different genres throughout different projects. I am influenced at this point mainly by foreign music, especially asian classical music, I like to explore unfamiliar tones, and the internet is a valuable resource for finding otherwise forgotten musics."

The Atlantic Manor - This Beautiful Sadness (USA) (A HLFP Compilation, 2010)

"This Beautiful Sadness" is a web-only album – that I had the pleasure to compile for HLFP – by Miami, Florida-based independent outsider band THE ATLANTIC MANOR.
Rick Sell is THE ATLANTIC MANOR. The prolific songwriter already released his 11th album since 2001 as THE ATLANTIC MANOR this year, titled "The World Beneath This World Is Brightening".
And all that without any support by a record company. He is doing it all by himself in true Do-it-yourself-Spirit!

Listening to this great sad music makes me think of NEIL YOUNG and the third THE VELVET UNDERGROUND lp or even some stuff by THE GUN CLUB, but nevertheless Rick clearly sounds like noone else. He has definitely found his own sound: a mix of dark, dreamy country-folk, indie rock and guitar drone music with occasional feedback outburst. Reflective, slow, poetic songs filled with sadness, vulnerability and humanity.
Great stuff! I admit, I find myself getting addicted to his music...

Q: Where exactly are you from?
A. Miami Florida USA. Home of Mosquitoes, crime, overpopulation, corruption and everything else that’s wrong with America.
Q: Since when are you into recording music?
A. I released my first two albums in 2001.
Q: Any previous bands that you've been involved worth mentioning?
A. Nothing worth mentioning.
Q: How'd you "label" your music?
A. Outsider music. outsider diy, psych, folk, drone, country tunes.
Q: How many records did you already release? Please list them in chronological order. Where can people buy them?
A. This new record is my 11th release. I don’t sell many records but the ones I do sell are purchased through http://www.cdbaby.com.
2010 – The World Beneath This World Is Brightening
2009 – Slow Drugs and Other Sorrows
2008 – On The Wrong Side Of A Saturday Night
2007 – All The Best Girls Have Winter Hearts
2006 – Sneaking Up On The Death Scene
2006 – The Trouble That You Left
2005 – Special Is Dead
2004 – Failing By The Second
2002 – The Desperate Vibe of Emotional Devastation
2001 – The Hate We Get Going
2001 – When I Am A Viking
Q: Any feedback for your last record "The World Beneath This World Is Brightening"?
A. It’s always interesting to me to hear/read about the way my records are received. I think my records connect with people who are looking for something different, the music lover who is always on that journey to discover a new and interesting band. The open minded listener. The new album has been overall well received. I’m happy to reside in the outer fringes of the music community.
Q: What's your favorite track on this compilation album? Why?
A. I like some more than others. DESPERATION I think would be a standout for me along with DEPRESSION DRAMA. The mood and the lyrics work well together.
Q: How do you write your songs? What comes first, words or music?
A. It can go either way but most of the time I sit down with my guitar and come up with a chord progression and build off that. I really do enjoy the writing process.
Q: What’s the best song you’ve ever written?
A. I’ve written so many it’s hard to say. Most of the songs picked for the comp would not make my list which is why I find other peoples opinions so interesting because these are the songs you chose to include. A few of my favorite songs would be FAILING BY THE SECOND, FIRE IN THE SKY, TWO STORY HOUSE, VESSELS, THE CAPTAINS NAME WAS DEATH, DESPERATION, DEAD KING RICHARD and WARM SPRING NIGHT.
Q: Favorite line from a song you've written?
A. “Busted into town like all bad cowboys do to lance the wicked heart that’s kicking in the womb” from DEPRESSION DRAMA. I try to create some type of imagery with my lyrics to fit the song. I definitely am not writing top 40 pop hits. It tends to be dark or creepy (but I hope in a good way).
“Yellow eyes and crooked spine, sorry grin and troubled mind, black scrapes the starless sky and folds it’s dark wings” from THE CAPTAINS NAME WAS DEATH is another example of the type of lyrics I enjoy and play out in my mind when I am hearing the song. I try to envision the character or creature or situation that is occurring.
Q: How do you record your albums?
A. My albums are recorded VERY QUICKLY. There are no rehearsals involved. I have a friend who will come in and play drums for me and another who plays piano, synth and keys. Neither of them has ever heard the songs before prior to hitting the record button. I play them the chord progression and give some very general direction as to the sound I am looking for and from that point on were off to the races. I may ask for a sad piano part or a quick drum pattern and everything is improvised as we move along. This is rock and roll not rocket science. Hit record and move on to the next one. I write and record for my own enjoyment and I throw these songs up against the wall and not all of them stick but some do and those are the ones I am happy with. I know the environment in which I find myself in musically. I am never going to sell many records. I will never have any type of mainstream success and I am fine with that. I write record and release my ugly little songs and send them out into the world hoping they find a happy home in someone’s record collection. The fact that some people enjoy what I do besides me is beyond anything I could have imagined. That is success for me.
Q: Any plans for live gigs?
A. I would like to but I need some poor souls who would be willing to join me in the inevitable disaster.
Q: What are your main musical influences?
A. Roky Erickson is very important to me. Half Japanese, Jad and David Fair have been a huge motivation to me as far as the DIY aspect. The Velvet Underground. The spirit of Jandek and the way he continues to release his music is inspirational.
Q: Favorite band at the moment?
A. Nick Cave’s GRINDERMAN is the baddest band on the planet. The music is beautiful Heavy and aggressive. Nothing can touch them.
Q: What was the first record that really blew your mind?
A. The song “Little Darling” by THE DIAMONDS. It’s an old song from the 50’s that was in my father’s record collection. I played the 45 over and over and over again. I may have cried once or twice I don’t recall. The song moved me in a way that I could not explain and music became more important to me than anything.
Q: Website?
Q: The last five records you bought?
A. Vic Chesnutt – At the Cut - You must youtube the live version of “Coward”. It’s amazing.
The Stooges - Fun House
Bill Callahan– I wish I were an eagle
Space Needle – Moray Eels eat the space needle – to replace my original scratched cd
The Shivers – The Shivers
Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...
A. If you’re not doing this already … write record and release your own music. Make the world a better place.
