Anyone's Dreamcolour - Opel Opera - Dadaistische Oper in 3 Akten (GER. 1994) REPOST

When I started this little blog here, one of the first posts was "Rosemarine", an excerpt from the LOFI- PSYCH-DADA-OPERA "OPEL OPERA - Dadaistische Oper in 3 Akten" by ANYONE'S DREAMCOLOUR, the homemade lofi psychedelic project of Mike S. (from ORANGE and earlier CLOUD NINE & THE VITAMIN C – two bands most of the regular blog readers here will probably know by now). Postings of "IT'S SO COLD OUT HERE IN SPACE" (1996) and "ACID DAZE" (1992) followed recently. Today it's time for ANYONE'S DREAMCOLOUR's third major work.

So now here it is: the complete thing in all its glorious lofi madness. What you get to hear (that is: if you dare) is a strange sound collage of various styles, ranging from spacy blues rock to hard rock snippets, experimental kraut psychedelia mixed with typewriter and radio noises, dog snarling and saxophone improvisations. There also is a theme ("Opel Opera Main Theme") that is repeated in different variations (reminding of ZAPPA's "Uncle Meat" concept), one time for example played as a pseudo reggae (Jamacian Opel") and another time in a mean grunge parody, DINOSAUR-JR.-style ("Dinosaur Opel").
This "Opera music" uses indeed all kind of different sounds, often in collage format, using every usable source imaginable. The lyrics are a mix of bad english, german and sheer dadaist nonsense. All songs were recorded in Mike's living room (see front cover!) on anaolog-4-track recorder in the time span of November 1992 'til June 1994.
A word about the Opera ... "concept": Go and sell back the painted Opel car ("Opel" is a well known car series built in Germany) to the factory and throw the keyboard player out of the band... (Well, make of that whatever you will...)
(In order to keep the flow of the music and to avoid unwelcome splits between tracks, I joined together some of the songfragments, when converting the audio tracks into mp3s.)

Some excellent, mostly instrumental psychedelic experimental music that somehow reminds me of RANGERS work (posted here) – yes, it's that good! – from a one man band project called HUMAN RESOURCES from Brooklyn, USA.

A: These are either straight live recordings or edits of live recordings, at home, on a small 7 channel mixer mixed down live to two channels straight into the computer

A: june 2010-august2010 on about 10 different days... none of the tracks were recorded on more than one day, each was selected out of a long 1-2 hour session

Pretty far out experimental cut-ups by J. Lee from San Francisco, CA, USA, Planet Earth.

LOOPS INC. is kind of a lo-fi noise/psychedelic /ambient project.

Q: Where exactly are you from?

A: I was raised in South Eastern Massachusetts. Been in San Francisco since 93.

Q: What is your real name?

A: Jason Alexander Lee is the official name on my government file. My friends call me J. or Jay. My mom calls me Jason. Sometimes I call myself Captain J. Rab.

Q: How recorded?

A: I always try and have a dictaphone cassette recorder on me just in case there's something happening. Besides that I used a 4 track cassette, regular cassette deck, Pro Tools, Garage Band. I recorded the raw material onto 30 second outgoing message loop tapes from an 80's Record-a-Call answering machine, manipulated, edited and layered them up on Pro Tools.

Q: When recorded?

A: Loops Inc. was recorded between 07 and 10. My girlfriend Marina Lazzara and I had a baby (Maizie) in 07 so I've primarily been a baby farmer since then. I also have lots of really creative but spaced out and/or busy friends I wanted to be involved so I kept extending the deadline. I'm still getting stuff from people even though it's done.

A: Most people involved are from San Francisco except where noted:

It's up to the listener to decide who's playing what. In some cases I don't even know. That would only take away from the mystique. - I could give a list of all the cool bands some of these people are in or who does cool art or whatever, but I won't. People usually want a quick read.

Q: Any more releases? Any "official" releases? Discografia?

A: Eventually my entire catalog will all be up on my archive page for free. I don't believe in CDs, don't have enough money to put out records. People at my level don't make money off recordings, anyhow. I'm not a business person and if I was it wouldn't be selling music, It'd probably be selling black holes.

- I've got a 12" full length vinyl record from Aerosol Species sitting around if anyone's interested and some singles, too. I put it out myself in 2000. Static Faction put out some singles and an LP, HIndi Rock Punk Raga around 97-98. It's out of print. I bought a copy at Ameoba a couple years ago for $4.00 so it's floating around out there somewhere.

Q: Since when does this project exist? What's the idea behind Loops Inc.?

A: What I call Aboriginal Compilations are cut up noise experimental recordings with whoever may be around at the time. I started doing that around 95-96. Loops Inc. is basically one of those.

I'll always try and get as many people involved in this kind of project for the random energy factor.

I've collaborated with many of these cats before, but this is the most people I've gotten together so far. It was like having an orchestra, kinda. My theory going into Loops Inc. was to get 30 second compositions from my friends, layer them up and give the illusion of songs.

Q: Any previous bands worth mentioning?

A: My band the Rabbles is putting out an 18 song batch of music called Dabble and I'm putting out a solo LP called the J.Lee Ching on a friend of mine's label. - My 90's rock bands were Static Faction, NoiseStar and Aerosol Species. There's several recordings by those groups worth checking out if one has the time. - There are several Aboriginal Records compilations which were put together cut up style and are pretty interesting if you're tripping hard enough, haha. - It's all going up on the archive page for free. http://public.me.com/jason_a_lee

A: Loops Inc. is a no budget everyman version of the Brian Eno Discreet Music LP's where he loops up a bunch of reel to reels and runs it through effects, so I had that in mind, but to take that and bring it down to the street level rather than some ivory tower recording studio.

COOL BAND NOW is a 4-track cassette lo-fi freak pop/rock project from Santa Cruz, CA, USA.

"the premise began a while ago when my old friend nick green and i proposed doing a series of very short, on-the-spot minisongs -- sometimes no longer than a hook or a chorus, and always recorded onto our tascam 4-tracks. within a few months, we had produced so many songs that we decided to compile a selection of them into two records: an ep, logan bean: the ep, (named after our mutual friend, who we assumed would be the only person to ever listen to it) and a full-length lp, better ingredients. better pizza. cool band now,

A: Nick Green, Chris Hopkins, Ken Kouot, and Logan Bean all played guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and synth.

Q: Since when does this band/project exist (are you into music)?

A: Hm, well, nick and i had the idea of doing a "tv commercial break" band years ago, where we would just string together extremely short little miniature songs as if one were channel-surfing. eventually we both acquired 4-track cassette recorders, and started recording soon afterwards.

Q: Any previous bands worth mentioning?

A: Previously nick and i were in a melodramatic indie band called "we carry thy banner." then nick played with "birds fled from me", and i played with "you can do it, old boy". we are both in an electro group called "bro montana". occasionally we do improvised ambience as "pc load letter", and we were in a short-lived grind band called "anti-difranco". that's a lot of different band names, i know, but for whatever reason we get tired of them really quickly. that's why i like the name "cool band now", because i just don't even want to think about it any more.

Q: How'd you "label" your music?

A: Pop Rock. (??? - mike-floyd -)

Q: Influences?

A: Guided By Voices... they were the biggest inspiration on this band. listening to Bob Pollard is like sitting in on lectures with a Professor of Rock & Roll (appropriately, Bob was a school teacher for many years before GBV started rocking).

Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...

A: The technological singularity. if you are unfamiliar with it, google it up and get into it. i think you could say "cool band now," is heavily inspired by the theory. (the last track on 'better ingredients' is called "singularity now!").

Absolutely amazing band! I love that cheapo 4-track collage approach to making music; this is really lo-fi and it's fantastic! Here you'll find more musical ideas in 2 minutes than you'll find when listening 2 hours to your average rock radio station!

Most of the songs/fragments could be described as indie rock, and the GUIDED BY VOICES influence is clearly audible, but there are also pieces of hardcore, some samples and indescribable fragments of surrealistic absurdity and soundpainting. One time the vocals even remind me of JACK BRUCE of CREAM fame... And on 'BIBPCBN' every now and then a distorted, disoriented 'Cortez' shimmers through...

You'll also get $tarbuck$ $huffle as a bonus, and that one could best be described as hip-hop in the style of the BEASTIE BOYS! I promise, you won't be bored!

Check this band out, if you're into lo-fi experimental indie music, and you won't be disappointed! Great stuff!

1. regionální (= Interpretace) - Ave Legionars (CZCH 199?)

"1. regionální" was another moniker name for another experimental INTERPRETACE recording from the 1990s.

"1.regionální" means "1st regional" and was meant as a joke because after the "Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia it was fashionable to name firms for instance "1st regional building" and thus INTERPRETACE took that name...

This collection of short pieces is titled "Ave Legionars" because the brother of Richard Charvat's grandfather was in that legion...

What we get to hear is a selection of avantgarde/experimental tracks, that use various sound snippets from the radio (e. g. JOHN CAGE's voice) for good effect. The last track "Tanyny" is some music that was used for a puppet theatre/ballet; it was a mix of recycled samples from previous recordings from the 80ties with folk song motives (for example "Ta naše písnička česká" - this Czech song is played in weird manner at the beginning and the end of that track on accordeon). The song was assambled from 5 homemade CD-Rs.

My personal favourite track: "nálet na londýn"

Two more very long, strange songs by RANGERS.

Joe Knight is the man behind RANGERS. He's from Dallas, TX, USA, and he's doing some pretty amazing stuff. Joe writes (on Myspace), that he's influenced by STREET VENDORS and SOUVENIERS. I don't know either of those two, so I can't say much about that. What I CAN say, is: THIS MUSIC IS GREAT! - very original, always an adventure to listen to (though it IS indeed quite lofi) and that I find myself listening to RANGER's fantastic, exotic music quite a lot...

So why not give him a chance to get heard. The musical flow that is presented here makes quite cool late night or early morning listening. Don't expect any hifi here. The sound is somewhat quite... well, muffled. This is indeed lofi, just as I like it!

Seems like a mixture of samples/found audio stuff and added/overdubbed instruments like percussion, treated guitars and so on. Strange, but beautiful and quite trippy in places.

Concorde - "Wie erfinden wir uns neu...?" – Computermixes 2002 (GER)

Some more stuff by the german experimental band CONCORDE, "remixed" on an Apple Mac OS 8.0, featuring audio collages ("MTV Mix 1" or  "Boerse" = Stock Exchange) and snippets/edits of longer improvisations ("Take 155"). Great stuff! My favourite track is "Check In with sound".

CONCORDE were a german experimental band, based in the middle of the downtown of Frankfurt a. M., that existed only for a short time: from 2000-2002. They played some kind of improvised, mostly instrumental neo krautrock, that also brings to mind post rock bands like MOGWAI or GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! If you like any of those bands, you should really check 'em out!
