„Lee McAdams is a musician, songwriter and producer from Providence, Rhode Island. His eclectic style and ability to adapt has led to many collaborations over the years, gaining some notoriety among the New England music scene with the Cosmic Factory. Lee started the Cosmic Factory, a psychedelic/progressive rock trio, in 2010 and the group remains very active. Lee’s most recent projects include the Tellurian Orchestra, an orchestral ambient/new age project, who released their debut EP in September 2023. Finding inspiration in everything from old roots music to groundbreaking progressive music, Lee’s music covers a lot of ground and is always evolving.

Lee also founded the indie label and recording studio Squatch Sounds, based in Smithfield, RI. At Squatch Sounds, he has mixed and/or recorded music for Wogglez, White Rabbit, the McAdams Brothers and more.
“In the Crypt” is the latest EP by Lee McAdams, released on October 27th. Just in time for Halloween! Stemming from his interest in the paranormal, McAdams wrote these three songs about cryptids. The second of three EPs that Lee started writing during the pandemic lockdown and the first to feature vocals. This EP was inspired by the music of Porcupine Tree, Clutch, Goblin, Pink Floyd and more. A music video for the song “Wendigo” will be released on October 31st." (EPK info)

Indeed I can hear a clear Porcupine Tree influence in Lee's work. And his guitar playing reminds me of  David Gilmour's later sound.

RE-UP: Orange - Open Air Flörsheim 1995 (GER)

Another Re-up of some stuff by the German Psychedelic grunge/experimental band ORANGE.
Here you'll have the chance to hear the music of their 2nd demo IN THE GARDEN OF THE DEMON KING (see below) live. Enjoy!

ORANGE live at the Open Air Festival Flörsheim, 07-28-1995. This is the complete gig.

Has probably the longest version of "NEIL'S ELEVATOR". There's a small cut at around 22.50 min, but it is hardly noticeable. "Souldrive" is – like in the most versions at that time – included (23.34 until 28.47).

This version here was dedicated to the Frankfurt avantgarde, impro experimental band LAY DE FEAR,that also included MEMBER at that time, a friend of the band and now - together with STOLLE - the heart of the emptyblaukraut-blog. (Read the comment in the original post to learn more about LAY DE FEAR and its side projects.)

You can hear Denner, the drummer and occasional singer and guitarist of ORANGE, mumbling "lay de fear... lay de fear" at some point (at 14.34) in the middle of the free form freak-out part of "Elevator" (starting at 10.58). Also you may notice the beginning of SUPER KING & THE FIRE ACTION's song "Breathing Soft 'n' Slow" shortly later... (at 15.26).

Suse surely must have been very hungry on that day, 'cause in the surrealistic spoken passage she raves about eating and food all the time. e.g. a cake baken by squirrels or apples from an apple tree...

The free form freak-out part has never again sounded so far out, reminding of the strangest GRATEFUL DEAD space explorations, mixed with early krautrock noise improvisations... A true listening adventure!

ORANGE played as the opening act at the two day Festival nearby Mainz and Frankfurt a. M., which also featured the old krautrock veterans GURU GURU – not an easy task to do, but they did quite well and also returned to play "Idiot in Bed" as an unplanned encore. This version here is a very good example of how ORANGE always changed their songs in order to keep the material fresh to themselves and their audience. Watch out for the improvised middle part of the song after the line "Now I'm on my way..." (at 4.18), that demonstrates the rush of the drug hitting the character of the song...

The National Orchestra of the United Kingdom of Goats - The Chronicles of Sillyphus (IT 2011)

According to Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/orchestraofukog) THE NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GOATS is from Italy (or South Tyrol?).

Don't know if that info is correct. There isn't much info around for those strange guys. Anyway, their sound is described as "symphonic grind pop", and I think If you like bands as diverse as DREAM THEATER, PINK FLOYD or even VOIVOD you might actually like them and should give it a try.

Their music is very well produced and the playing is excellent.

They have a second album out now, also for free download that is similar in style, The Three Walls of Kolepta, again kind of a prog-metal concept mini album. Check it out on their bandcamp site below.

RE-UP: Catasto Elettrico - Gas (IT 2007?)

CATASTO ELETTRICO is an improvisational Italian band, that retired from playing live to concentrate on recording improvised sessions very much in a jazzy progressive style (with some indie influences). This session here, "GAS", reminds me a little bit of TORTOISE in some aspects and very much of the early SOFT MACHINE (just listen to that fuzz bass!), which is meant as a BIG compliment of course.

Catasto Elettrico - Infinite (2009)

No need to introduce those guys to you regular blog readers, since they were with us almost right from the beginning and are also featured on the 1st and 2nd HLFP-Samplers.

If improvised Canterbury Prog-Jazz-Rock and electric MILES-DAVIS-Fusion-Jazz is the thing for you, you need search no further.

This is already CATASTO ELETTRICO's eights web release, and all of them are well worth checking out. You will find some of them here on this blog, or you may visit the band's website, where all they ever did is posted for your enjoyment for free download.

Though "Infinite" is not my favourite CATASTO ELETTRICO release ("Radio" is), it is nevertheless a fantastic record. The first two tracks are more in the electric Miles or WEATHER REPORT mode, while the last song is more in an uptempo electronic style and a little bit less relaxed. Enjoy!

Nick Chapman - EP 2007/EP 2008 (UK)

"I am a guitarist and electronic musician operating from Norwich, U.K. I have played guitar for over 25 years and been using music composition software and keyboards for over 5 years. Most of my pieces are instrumental. Some selections have been featured as soundtrack material on various educational or promotional DVDs and on a couple of independent films." (NICK CHAPMAN)

When asked, NICK CHAPMAN mentions many influences, mostly psych-prog bands from the 70s (AMON DÜÜL 2, ASH RA TEMPEL, MAGMA, PINK FLOYD...). Listening to his two EPs especially the more ambient and electronic instrumental sounds of krautrock musicians like MANUEL GÖTTSCHING (ASH RA TEMPEL) or CLUSTER/HARMONIA or POPOL VUH come to mind - but without simply copying those bands. Some of the more quiet piano passages also remind of BRIAN ENO's ambient works (e. g. "My world is very small").

If you are into electronic/ambient music you should really check these EPs out. NICK's music is quite relaxing and a rewarding listening experience. It takes you on a pleasant journey with some occasional dark passages, but nevertheless makes you feel comfortable, and it never gets kitschy (okay - there's one exception: "Thin Air", but then: It's only 1:17 min and it's the last song of the EP; so it's quite a nice 'comedown' after the whole trip). The 2008 EP also features some harder guitar passages, more in a prog rock style (e. g. "Bee City").
Strongly recommended!

My favourite tracks: "Observations from the ocean floor" and "Golombek to play (and win)" - excellent stuff!

Nuo - Song Collection (Czch 199?)

These recordings from the end of the 90s from NUO are neither homemade lofi nor extremely psychedelic (but so what!) - they are rather quite professionel, and pretty good. We're talking about JAZZ with a slight psych-prog touch (e.g. on 'Moe', a track that could easily be mistaken for a mid-seventies jazzy krautrock piece by EMBRYO or a track by one of WOLFGANG DAUNER's or EBERHARD WEBER's projects).

NUO are: Jakub Zitko- keyboards, Marcel Bárta- altosax, Pavel Hrubý- tenorsax, Oskar Török- trumpet, Jan Jirucha- trombone, Jiří Šimek- guitar, Aleš Slavík- bass, Miloš Dvořáček- drums, Ivan Acher- fonovox.

Some of the afore mentioned musicians, namely Ivan Acher and Jakub Zitko, also played with 1st Regional before they went to NUO. They left Liberec to study on the jazz school in Prague and now work as professional musicians for various recording sessions. NUO released a CD "Multimusic Minibigband" in 2004. The Flow - Incubation (GR 2003)

"'THE FLOW is a progressive/psychedelic/space rock band from Patras, Greece. They were formed in 2000 and since then they have released one album called 'Incubation' (released in 2003) and have played many concerts in Greece. Their style revolves around 60's krautrock and progressive rock of the 70's. Some of their influences are GONG, ASH RA TEMPEL, CAN, AGITATION FREE, VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and many more. Furthermore they blend traditional folk Greek melodies played by original traditional Greek instruments such as 'daouli' (a kind of drum) and the 'flute of Pana' (ancient Greek flute). They also love blending the old sound (vintage synths) with the modern one (laptop)."

Very competent progressive rock band that clearly deserves more recognition. Rather than the above mentioned bands I hear some reflections of GENESIS and PINK FLOYD, and like with most of the better 70's prog rock bands one can also clearly detect some jazz influences. Also reminds me of the better works of  2nd generation prog bands like PORCUPINE TREE and should appeal to any serious prog fan.

Catasto Elettrico - Micro (IT 2008)

In my opinion this is their best work until now. If you don't know CATASTO ELETTRICO yet, "Micro" is a good starting point. If you like SOFT MACHINE, the late MILES DAVIES or WEATHER REPORT this stuff here might be the right medicine for you.
