Anyone's Dreamcolour - Opel Opera - Dadaistische Oper in 3 Akten (GER. 1994) REPOST

When I started this little blog here, one of the first posts was "Rosemarine", an excerpt from the LOFI- PSYCH-DADA-OPERA "OPEL OPERA - Dadaistische Oper in 3 Akten" by ANYONE'S DREAMCOLOUR, the homemade lofi psychedelic project of Mike S. (from ORANGE and earlier CLOUD NINE & THE VITAMIN C – two bands most of the regular blog readers here will probably know by now). Postings of "IT'S SO COLD OUT HERE IN SPACE" (1996) and "ACID DAZE" (1992) followed recently. Today it's time for ANYONE'S DREAMCOLOUR's third major work.

So now here it is: the complete thing in all its glorious lofi madness. What you get to hear (that is: if you dare) is a strange sound collage of various styles, ranging from spacy blues rock to hard rock snippets, experimental kraut psychedelia mixed with typewriter and radio noises, dog snarling and saxophone improvisations. There also is a theme ("Opel Opera Main Theme") that is repeated in different variations (reminding of ZAPPA's "Uncle Meat" concept), one time for example played as a pseudo reggae (Jamacian Opel") and another time in a mean grunge parody, DINOSAUR-JR.-style ("Dinosaur Opel").
This "Opera music" uses indeed all kind of different sounds, often in collage format, using every usable source imaginable. The lyrics are a mix of bad english, german and sheer dadaist nonsense. All songs were recorded in Mike's living room (see front cover!) on anaolog-4-track recorder in the time span of November 1992 'til June 1994.
A word about the Opera ... "concept": Go and sell back the painted Opel car ("Opel" is a well known car series built in Germany) to the factory and throw the keyboard player out of the band... (Well, make of that whatever you will...)
(In order to keep the flow of the music and to avoid unwelcome splits between tracks, I joined together some of the songfragments, when converting the audio tracks into mp3s.)

"New Orleans' Frozen Bears hits WFMU's top 30 with "lost" psych/lo-fi debut album, "2000"

In the year 2000...

...former bandmates Adam Waller and Kevin Hurstell reconvened in Waller's tiny apartment bedroom to explore the depths of their musical symbiosis on Adam's 4 track (a Tascam Porta 3, pretty much the lowest-end model available). Armed with a couple of guitars, whatever they could find to use as "drums", their Schlitz addled imaginations, and a barely functioning, cheesy guitar effects processor from the early 90s--the Digitech RP-1--Frozen Bears set out to create a 4 track love letter to their record collections, and their imagined record collections in "the future. (...) The result is an intricate mix of stimulating, and stunningly contrasting influences. Danceable beats and loops are merged with raw, stripped down punk energy. Found sound like lectures and sound effects from thrift store LPs are often substituted for vocals. On 2000, the Bears blur the line between art and raw power, taking cues from fellow lo-fi, home taped duos Chrome, Ween, early Pavement, and Tall Dwarfs; psychedelic heroes like the 13th Floor Elevators and The Seeds, the raw garage aesthetic of the Pebbles/Back From the Grave collections; and standbys like Sonic Youth, GBV, the Misfits, Man..or Astroman?, the Stones, early Beat Happening, Flipper, White Light/Heat era Velvets, etc." (from band info; more info in the zip file)

Excellent band, great (fuzz) guitar driven psychedelic punk rock songs mixed with some more experimental sound collage pieces in homemade lofi sound quality. Lots of guitar sound effects and found samples... Somewhere between CHROME and BUTTHOLE SURFERS...

1. regionální (= Interpretace) - Ave Legionars (CZCH 199?)

"1. regionální" was another moniker name for another experimental INTERPRETACE recording from the 1990s.

"1.regionální" means "1st regional" and was meant as a joke because after the "Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia it was fashionable to name firms for instance "1st regional building" and thus INTERPRETACE took that name...

This collection of short pieces is titled "Ave Legionars" because the brother of Richard Charvat's grandfather was in that legion...

What we get to hear is a selection of avantgarde/experimental tracks, that use various sound snippets from the radio (e. g. JOHN CAGE's voice) for good effect. The last track "Tanyny" is some music that was used for a puppet theatre/ballet; it was a mix of recycled samples from previous recordings from the 80ties with folk song motives (for example "Ta naše písnička česká" - this Czech song is played in weird manner at the beginning and the end of that track on accordeon). The song was assambled from 5 homemade CD-Rs.

Wonder Wheel - Hello Picture! (USA 2008)

'Hello Picture!' is already the 17th WONDER WHEEL album, and Paul A. Rosales' 30th solo release since June 2003, Recorded October - December 2008 in his home studio in Orange, California, USA. Paul says that "this album is also the first true work of the 21st century".

Paul's work has some similarities with RANGERS' homemade cassette collages (posted earlier), so if you like those, you may also like WONDER WHEEL, though the WONDER WHEEL tracks are probably a little more focused, more in a pop structure with vocals - and also they are much shorter pieces. But just like RANGERS Paul creates in WONDER WHEEL a complete musical cosmos that you will, when you have listened to some of his music before, always recognize in a moment, - for its originality and uniqueness in sound. And that is pretty cool, I think...

Joe Knight is the man behind RANGERS. He's from Dallas, TX, USA, and he's doing some pretty amazing stuff. Joe writes (on Myspace), that he's influenced by STREET VENDORS and SOUVENIERS. I don't know either of those two, so I can't say much about that. What I CAN say, is: THIS MUSIC IS GREAT! - very original, always an adventure to listen to (though it IS indeed quite lofi) and that I find myself listening to RANGER's fantastic, exotic music quite a lot...

So why not give him a chance to get heard. The musical flow that is presented here makes quite cool late night or early morning listening. Don't expect any hifi here. The sound is somewhat quite... well, muffled. This is indeed lofi, just as I like it!

Seems like a mixture of samples/found audio stuff and added/overdubbed instruments like percussion, treated guitars and so on. Strange, but beautiful and quite trippy in places.

The Wig Museum - House Of Toucan (UK 2006)

Another PSYCHEDELIC GEM by an until now unknown one-man-band, called THE WIG MUSEUM, based somewhere in provincial UK. Marvin, the man behind the project, has played and recorded with various bands over the last 20 years and THE WIG MUSEUM is his solo project.

"House of Toucan" was recorded in 2006 in a humble basement studio – and is a great piece of art, believe me! There's lots of mood swings and influences range from film soundtracks/weird cinema to inner and outer space travels in the style of 70s krautrock or various psych bands of older times. The overall atmosphere is quite nightmarish, surreal in a filmic sense, reminding of horror movie soundtracks as well as of STEREOLAB harmony pieces, only to be interrupted by explosions of noises, backward loops and scary sound effects. This is PSYCHEDELIC in its true meaning: mind expanding!

"... They come surfing a mondo wave of electric piano riffs and crying trumpets, laden with phantastic sights and sinister sounds from the bendiest corners of the universe. Please feel free to enter my wigwam. Pull up a cube, slip into something more comfortable, and watch your screaming mind as it drips to the floor. Soon you may see sphericals, skyangles, triangles and evil rhomboid faces; you may hear bells, sirens, explosions and even screams – do not be alarmed. Just take a deep breath and keep repeating 'it's only The Wig Museum... only The Wig Museum... only The Wig Museum...' "

Concorde - "Wie erfinden wir uns neu...?" – Computermixes 2002 (GER)

Some more stuff by the german experimental band CONCORDE, "remixed" on an Apple Mac OS 8.0, featuring audio collages ("MTV Mix 1" or  "Boerse" = Stock Exchange) and snippets/edits of longer improvisations ("Take 155"). Great stuff! My favourite track is "Check In with sound".

CONCORDE were a german experimental band, based in the middle of the downtown of Frankfurt a. M., that existed only for a short time: from 2000-2002. They played some kind of improvised, mostly instrumental neo krautrock, that also brings to mind post rock bands like MOGWAI or GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! If you like any of those bands, you should really check 'em out!

Anyone's Dreamcolour - Acid Daze (GER, 1992)

This is a true "psychedelic" recording in its literal sense. And probably the most "far out" musical work of the one-man-home-recording-project ANYONE'S DREAMCOLOUR. One improvised guitar track was recorded, while allegedly under the influence of some psychedelic substance, and later, over the next few weeks/months three more tracks were overdubbed with various guitars, voices, drums and other sounds – trying to resemble the different moods of a psychedelic experience. The result is – not surprising – an unnerving, often disturbing bizarre listening adventure. This for sure isn't straight rock music! Rather a kind of a rough soundscape, giving one the opportunity to witness an inner space travel. Some tracks, like for example "Out of Time", are heavily disjointed, resembling quite effectively the affect of psychedelic substances. 

"Butterfly", which is sandwiched between the two parts of the long "Acid Daze" song, was recorded under similar conditions around the same time on another date. This time the rhythm guitar track was recorded live together with a drum track, more or less improvised, lyrics added later.
"No Difference" was (in a more rock oriented version/arrangement) later played live by CLOUD NINE (and ORANGE) and also recorded. "Butterfly" also appeared for a short time in the ORANGE playlist.

Be warned! This recording is surely something of an acquired taste. But look at the name of this blog. Isn't that what it's all about? Different sounds for different people...

The People's Tongue - present Sonny Bono's Favorites (USA 2007)

Now please prepare yourself for sheer madness! This will probably be the weirdest mixture of sounds and noises, that you've ever heard...

My personal favorite track is "Tesla Cow Nerve Ion": some hawaiian slide guitar pasted above screaming, cow noises, some strange voices and a heavily distorted slo-mo drum track – and that description doesn't even come close to the sound chaos unfolding inside your brain while listening to this song.

OK, the concept to feature a collection of one-minute-songs on one record is not that new. THE RESIDENTS did this already on their Commercial Album a long time ago. But, so what? This stuff here is even weirder than THE RESIDENTS, though similarities do exist. And another reference point is of course Frank Zappa and the bizarre humour of the Beastie Boys maybe. Anyway: This here is great, great fun! There is so much to discover; and it surely was a lot of work to assemble all those different sounds and voices.
