HOMEMADE LOFI PSYCH --- WHERE TO START?

"There is so much great music here..." WHERE TO START???

I recommend to
start with the HLFP-Samplers (especially HLFP 04).
Here you will come to know many of the bands/musicians featured in this blog. If you like what you hear, you may check out more of their music later on.
(You may also click on the picture on the sidebar and you will find the original post with download links.)

There is also a "FOCUS ON..." section. Here you will find albums that imo are absolutely great (***** = "five-stars-recordings") and that are essential listening and strongly recommended for download.

I TRY to RE-UP some stuff that has been down from time to

time, but I still don't have enough time to

listen to/post much new stuff.

Sorry!

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C – Narration For Entering Galaxy (With Common Substitutes)

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C – Narration For Entering Galaxy (With Common Substitutes) (edited version, originally recorded live 1985-02-02 at Teestube Oase, Heppenheim, Germany)

In February 1985 Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C had their debut gig at a small youth club in Heppenheim, Hessen, Germany. The place was packed.

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C (1983-1992) started as a school band and played an unusual mixture of late 60s and early 70s inspired psychedelic rock. Their gigs often featured a psychedelic lightshow. Both, music and lightshow, were extraordinary at that time in that area. No other band sounded like them and noone had such a lightshow ... They were outsiders from the beginning.

If you want to read, hear and see more of that band look here (mostly in German until now, but soon there will be an English translation).

Narration For Entering Galaxy (With Common Substitutes) was the only track cowritten by guest sax player Björn J. and bassist Mike S. The main riff is based on the Quicksilver Messenger Service's treatment of Bo Diddleys Mona.

The title of that song is kind of self-explanatory.

I'm walking down the street watching raindrops passing by

Obscure things appear to me, reflecting colours on my way

Colourful enclosed by light from empty windows

Dazed and confused he's on the raod right now

Let's hear what's coming up next.

Unknown sculptures are presented to my view not knowing what they mean

Mysterious figures dance around me, movement is magnetizing me

Evidently there is no escape

Helpless I am drifting away, surprised it is electrifying him

Let's hear what's coming up next.

Istantaneously I'm realizing that there is a door right on my way

the sparkling way

Melting music comes right out of it

Floating in the air I'm entering this magical door, Cloud Nine is welcoming me!

He's slipping away to a starlit path

Let's hear what's coming up next.

But at the end I know I had been dreaming

Elegant illusion was drifting me up, high through the sky

Clouds surrounding me

Rainbows brought me down, still I remember all this light

My weakness became obvious:

Thinking is the best way to travel

(He had been gone, now the earth has got him back)

DANNY TAKES A TRIP + POET ZERO im Waggon, Offenbacg, Germany

Hallo Freunde und Freundinnen!

Endlich ist es soweit! Am 02.07.15 findet im WAGGON In Offenbach das allererste POET ZERO Konzert in Bandbesetzung statt! Den Support bestreitet DANNY TAKES A TRIP. Yeah!!!

DANNY TAKES A TRIP

Weird Acoustic Rock - Palimpseste, Collagen, Zitate, Songs.

RE-UP by Request: Captain Fartfish And His Careful Muffins - Live, Woodstöckchen 1987 (GER.)

CAPTAIN FARTFISH AND HIS CAREFUL MUFFINS was a psychedelic jam band from Germany, operating between 1987 and 1989 in the Odenwald area near Darmstadt. The three man band was heavily influenced by ZAPPA (especially Zappa's guitar playing – and also his humor), CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND (around his most experimental phase, 1969) and Free Rock/Free Jazz (in the mood of early GURU GURU for example).
What makes this band so special is the excellent guitar playing of both Holger B. and Daniel P. Caesar (later SUPERKING & THE FIRE ACTION, ORANGE among others). It's most of the time quite heavy (the brilliant "Shotokan") and/or very experimental ("Little Insects...", "... Deep Sea Fish").

Another weapon especially for this gig here was the trombone played in an unnerving Free-Jazz-CAPTAIN BEEFHEART-style ("The Captain Whips It Out"...).

The Woodstöckchen (= Little Woodstock) was a small (private party) underground festival, May 1987, in some vineyards near Heppenheim an der Bergstraße. Imagine an improvised stage in front of a small crowd of chatty stoned local freaks in the sunshine and you will get the picture...

REPOST by Request: POET ZERO (Orange, Ephemerol...) - Vanille Club, Radio X (GER. 2002)

POET ZERO (aka MAXIM ENGL) of EPHEMEROL fame doing a solo acoustic radio concert, broadcast 09-17-2002 on "VANILLE CLUB", RADIO X, Frankfurt a. M., Germany, performing songs from his solo repertoire as well as his former bands/projects THE JANITORS OF LUNACY, ORANGE, SPACE TRUCKIN' and PAN AMP.
This is an edited version of the broadcast, because some cover versions of songs by TIM BUCKLEY, NICK DRAKE and BLACK SABBATH, that POET ZERO
also performed on that day, had to be left out for copyright reasons...

The highlights probably "Stanley Kubrick's Diaries" (compare to the electric version by the JANITORS OF LUNACY here) and "Magic Spell" (also performed many times live by ORANGE). At the end of "Magic Spell" you can hear a quote from "Neil's Elevator", which fits in here perfectly...
Enjoy!

RE-POST: Orange - Industrial Acid Punk Rock (Live Bootleg 1994-96) (GER)

I already posted some material by this German psychedelic rock/grunge band, that existed between 1993 and 1997, and will do so in the future. Why? Because I really like that stuff.
ORANGE mainly played in the Rhein Main area around Frankfurt a. M. and also did some festivals/open airs in that region and also in south Germany - to mixed responses. They baffled quite a lot of people with their unique sound/style mixture (grunge, free style improvisation, krautrock, psych-folk, psychedelic rock, minimalistic avantgarde music...). ORANGE built themselves a small follower fan base with their always surprising live gigs (not a great number of people, but it was ok for a start). No two concerts were the same, and so one never knew what to expect from the band.

ORANGE also once won the second prize at some kind of "battle of the bands" contest with some hundred bands competitioning in Mainz at the OPEN OHR FESTIVAL in the final round. The interview segment (track 6) is about that competition, where ORANGE played - of all things - a shortened (!) 20 minutes version of "Neil's Elevator".

This live collection here features the more experimental pieces of the band with the flashlight on ORANGE's most avantgarde project, the minimalistic track "Rockwork Orange", that followed an acid punk version of"Magic Spell" (read more about the history and the many variations of that song here).

This version of "Rockwork Orange" is a composite version from two different gigs, with the long middle section coming from the debut performance of "Rockwork Orange" from Frankfurt's "Dreikönigskeller". After 40 minutes the tape run out, while the song lasted for over 60 minutes. The story goes like this:

"In the 'Dreikönigskeller' we first played a normal set with some more or less simple rock songs and then wanted to end the gig with our minimalistic piece 'Rockwork Orange'. The original idea was to play the same riff over and over again until everybody in the audience left the room or the power was cut off by the club owner - however long that might take. But most of the people in the audience really got into us and were digging what we were doing - you can hear some ecstatic screams every 15 minutes or so from some guys in the audience - and the club owner also liked what we did and even contributed on the mixing desk adding spontaniously some effects. So it all ended that we played the same riff for over 60 minutes until we called it quitts... It was indeed a very special experience for both, audience and band. Very trance like and very far out." (Mike S. 2009)

"Rockwork Orange" was played live on view occasions, but never that long again and more often in a more 'traditional' way with the guitar doing some noise solo instead of monotoniously repeating the same riff over and over again.

"He Came To Me One Morning" was improvised on the spot and is a good example of the more free style jamming ORANGE.

"25 Ways" and "Yawning" are some kind of organized improvisations, more in song format.

More ORANGE stuff is still available for download here.
Enjoy!

RE-UP: Orange - Open Air Flörsheim 1995 (GER)

Another Re-up of some stuff by the German Psychedelic grunge/experimental band ORANGE.
Here you'll have the chance to hear the music of their 2nd demo IN THE GARDEN OF THE DEMON KING (see below) live. Enjoy!

ORANGE live at the Open Air Festival Flörsheim, 07-28-1995. This is the complete gig.
Has probably the longest version of "NEIL'S ELEVATOR". There's a small cut at around 22.50 min, but it is hardly noticeable. "Souldrive" is – like in the most versions at that time – included (23.34 until 28.47).
This version here was dedicated to the Frankfurt avantgarde, impro experimental band LAY DE FEAR,that also included MEMBER at that time, a friend of the band and now - together with STOLLE - the heart of the emptyblaukraut-blog. (Read the comment in the original post to learn more about LAY DE FEAR and its side projects.)
You can hear Denner, the drummer and occasional singer and guitarist of ORANGE, mumbling "lay de fear... lay de fear" at some point (at 14.34) in the middle of the free form freak-out part of "Elevator" (starting at 10.58). Also you may notice the beginning of SUPER KING & THE FIRE ACTION's song "Breathing Soft 'n' Slow" shortly later... (at 15.26).
Suse surely must have been very hungry on that day, 'cause in the surrealistic spoken passage she raves about eating and food all the time. e.g. a cake baken by squirrels or apples from an apple tree...
The free form freak-out part has never again sounded so far out, reminding of the strangest GRATEFUL DEAD space explorations, mixed with early krautrock noise improvisations... A true listening adventure!
ORANGE played as the opening act at the two day Festival nearby Mainz and Frankfurt a. M., which also featured the old krautrock veterans GURU GURU – not an easy task to do, but they did quite well and also returned to play "Idiot in Bed" as an unplanned encore. This version here is a very good example of how ORANGE always changed their songs in order to keep the material fresh to themselves and their audience. Watch out for the improvised middle part of the song after the line "Now I'm on my way..." (at 4.18), that demonstrates the rush of the drug hitting the character of the song...
Taken from the original 2-track stereo soundboard mix, excellent sound.

ORANGE - Flörsheim Open Air 07-28-1995
(mp3-zip, 6 songs, 72 min, 99 MB, art incl.)

4. Tryin' To Be A Good Human - 5.29

ephemeroL - live in Offenbach April 10th 2010

Noise/experimental/drone band EPHEMEROL from Frankfurt, GER, should be no stranger to you blog readers, since I already posted quite some of their stuff on HLFP (see link below).

Interview with Maxim Engl via email:

Q: How was it like to play the Waggon?

A: Playing at the Waggon was really an experience: The place is not only called Waggon, it IS an old waggon. The room is small and completely made out of wood. - The atmosphere on this evening was truly magic, more a journey than a rock concert. The people were so much into the music, they forgot to buy drinks! Not good for the purse, but good for the biography! It reminds me on what rock history tells about early VANILLA FUDGE concerts, so it was quite an honour to go home with empty pockets.

Q: Who involved? Who played what?

A: Peter Prochir: Drums

Roger Eckhardt: Bass

Me (= Maxim Engl): Guitar

Q: Where exactly are you from?

A: Frankfurt, Germany.

Q: Since when are you into recording music?

A: The band was founded in the end of 2003 and started recording in early 2005.

Q: Any previous bands/side projects that you've been involved in worth mentioning?

A: Time for namedropping! – Our most famous band member is Peter. In the early 80ies he played with Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth and Christoph Anders in the avant/jazz/punk band CASSIBER. When he decided to leave because of other musical aims, he was replaced by former HENRY COW drummer Chris Cutler. – In 1989 Peter formed the industrial band SIELWOLF who worked with Mick Harris (NAPALM DEATH, SCORN, PAINKILLER) and with Carlos Peron (YELLO). – Roger played in the 90ies with house DJ C-Rock and jazz singer Claire Dietrich in DIET. – Me, myself & I played with THE JANITORS OF LUNACY, ORANGE, and PAN AMP. Music of these later bands aswell as more information about them you'll find on this blog here.

Q: How'd you "label" your music?

A: Noise/Drone/Experimental. – Fact is, I am responsible for the sound design and the musical direction of ephemeroL. ephemeroL came out of the ashes of PAN AMP. The sound design was the same: heavy guitar, heavy bass, heavy drums, but I was not longer interested in writing MOTORPSYCHO-influenced indie rock songs. I thought that the band should have more strange and psychedelic elements that should not be based on 60ies and 70ies rock. – When Peter joined the band, we had two band members with an industrial background. So I thought it was more interesting to have an open, modern concept that combines post rock, avantgarde, noise and drone. I liked the idea of writing tracks, but we didn't want to become one of the thousands of MOGWAI clones that drown in all-too-sweet melodies. The balance of melody and harshness is an important factor in our music.

Q: How do you "write" your songs? How much is arranged, how much improvised?

A: For ephemeroL there are two ways to structure music:

1) A tune comes out of an idea or an improvisation during practice. In a second step we try to find out how much arrangement the material needs to satisfy the band.

2) I come up with complete tunes and guitar arrangements. Then we arrange the rest (bass, drums, maybe soundscapes and samples).

Q: How do you record your albums?

A: For the first album, we had complete tunes that we recorded in Ike Anger's practice room in Frankfurt. Vocals, overdubs, mix and mastering happened at his studio. – The second album "Plenk!" was recorded only by me. I came with nothing to Ike's studio and went out 7 weeks later with lots of guitar and organ tracks. I needed two weeks more for sorting out and for edit instructions, then Ike mixed and mastered the album. – The third album, which will be released in 2011, was recorded at Klanghaus studio in Frankfurt by Andi Kunze, but will be mixed and mastered at Aleph studio in Seattle by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer, a dream team in sound (SUNN O))), EARTH, ASVA, SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, GRAILS, EAGLE TWIN etc.).

Q: What are the future plans for ephemeroL?

A: The master plan is to find a proper record label for our new album.

Q: What are your main musical influences?

A: The real influences lead back to the basics, the past of us three. They don't reflect directly what we're doing now. – Peter is influenced by: Mark Stewart/Swans/Brian Eno/Steve Reich/Black Sabbath – Roger is influenced by: Abba/Beatles/Black Sabbath – I am Influenced by: Black Flag/Hüsker Dü/Black Sabbath/Motorpsycho/Robert Fripp/Keith Levene (PIL)/Derek Bailey/Wolfgang Spelmans (DAF)/Denis D'Amour (Voivod)/Charlemagne Palestine.

Q: Favourite band at the moment?

A: My favourite band for the last years is BORIS from Tokyo, although I don't like any of their 2010 releases.

Q: What was the first record that really blew your mind?

A: Peter: BLACK SABBATH "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"

Roger: GENESIS "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"

Me: JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: "Electric Ladyland"

Q: The last five records you bought/downloaded?

A: SUNN O))) "MONOLITHS & DIMENSIONS"

BORIS "AMPLIFIER WORSHIP"

HARVEY MILK "LIVE AT THE SUPERSONIC 2008"

MASTER MUSICIANS OF BUKKAKE "TOTEM ONE"

MASTER MUSICIANS OF BUKKAKE "TOTEM TWO"

Laundryscope - Live March 2010

This here is a 70 minutes live performance by HOUSTON's drone rock/noise/experimental improv band LAUNDRYSCOPE, recorded in March 2010.

Very atmospheric, cool stuff!
Don't expect any "rock music" here!
This is, hmmm ... post rock space sound!

"We are from Houston tx, we use fake names which are Tones Montgolfier - Guitars,Touch Conners - Guitar, and Morton Hurley - Percussion, and recording embellishments. These songs are recorded on a Digital recorder. We have 2 cdrs and one cassette which is Laundryscope (the live recordings) Plus d'improvisations cdr, and Laundryscope/Gst Cassette, all these are self released in small #'s. We started this band in early 2010. We would label our music as improvisational, and we are music nerds with too many influences to mention. Our Myspace is: Myspace.com/laundryscope. We would like people to know that we don't take things too seriously we are just starting out and having fun but any support would be appreciated."

"Are y'all gonna play a song or just fuck around?"
"Play some Robin Trower!!" -
dude at ARCHIE's"

"
Man, y'all sounded like an orchestra, it was like pink floyd, man, you know?, it was nice you know but i kept wanting to hear, you know, like this voice, it was good, but you know, I just kept waiting to hear this voice, but what do I know, I'm just an old fucker" - old fucker at ARCHIE's

"
It's a miracle, my gout is cured, Thank you Laundryscope" - Mabel
