This is already the fifth post with LEONEL GARCIA's music on HLFP. His albums are always worth a listen. I especially like his guitar playing, but he very often also comes up with some pretty cool surprises regarding song structure or instrumentation. - I like this album quite a lot.

My favourite track: the experimental "He Donated His Brain To Science (Fiction)" and the middle section of "Life Ain't sweet" is just fabulous!

Catasto Elettrico - Infinite (2009)

No need to introduce those guys to you regular blog readers, since they were with us almost right from the beginning and are also featured on the 1st and 2nd HLFP-Samplers.

If improvised Canterbury Prog-Jazz-Rock and electric MILES-DAVIS-Fusion-Jazz is the thing for you, you need search no further.

This is already CATASTO ELETTRICO's eights web release, and all of them are well worth checking out. You will find some of them here on this blog, or you may visit the band's website, where all they ever did is posted for your enjoyment for free download.

Though "Infinite" is not my favourite CATASTO ELETTRICO release ("Radio" is), it is nevertheless a fantastic record. The first two tracks are more in the electric Miles or WEATHER REPORT mode, while the last song is more in an uptempo electronic style and a little bit less relaxed. Enjoy!

Andrew Bland - Atypical Dimensions (USA 2009)

"Andrew Bland
is a multi-instrumentalist who, with the help of a few friends and a four-track tape recorder, creates atmospheric soundscapes that bridge traditional world instruments with mellow electronica, time-honored folk song structures with modal and polyrhythmic textures, and old-school analog recording procedures with postmodern composition and sampling techniques."

"Atypical Dimensions" is Andrew's last album, recorded August '08 - March '09 on 4-track analog in Andrew's attic, Seelyville, IN, USA. Again it is very atmospheric music, using a whole range of different instruments, many of them not very common in European or American music (see the collection here). You'll find 18 short soundscapes, most of them under 2 minutes, often rather simple but beautiful collages and compositions, that make for very comfortable, relaxing listening. I hear traces of world music, experimental weird folk as well as krautrock elements and post rock. Quite a fascinating mixture. Recommended!

Cluster to perform live in Berlin June 18th

Krautrock legend CLUSTER will perform tomorrow, Thursday, June 18th, at Berghain, Berlin, Germany, at 8 o'clock p.m. (also: KASHIWA DAISUKE + LEMERCIER & THE NATURAL HISTORY D-TOUR).

Also of interest to all Berlin visitors or residents: Legendary 1968 club ZODIAK (then run by electronic pioneer CONRAD SCHNITZLER and home of well known first generation cosmic krautrock bands like TANGERINE DREAM, ASH RA TEMPEL and AGITATION FREE) will be revived for a special ZODIAK Party featuring the performance/record release party of Berlin neo-krautrock band aTELIERtHEREMIN the same day (WAU - former ZODIAK - Hallesches Ufer 32, Berlin-Kreuzberg).

Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine) (1945-2009) / Charlie Mariano (1923-2009) R.I.P.

One of my favourite psych-progressive rock / jazz fusion bass guitarists died 7 June 2009: HUGH HOPPER (29 April 1945 - 7 June 2009).

"Hopper's role with Soft Machine was initially as the group's road manager, but he already composed for their first album The Soft Machine and played bass on one of its tracks. In 1969 he was recruited to be the group's bassist for their second album, Volume Two and, with Mike Ratledge and Robert Wyatt, he took part in a recording session for a solo album of Syd Barrett's (formerly of Pink Floyd, with whom the early Soft Machine had regularly gigged). Hopper continued with the Softs, playing bass and contributing numerous compositions, until 1973." (wikipedia)

If you are not familiar with HOPPER's work you should definitely check out SOFT MACHINE's Volume Two - a fantastic psych-prog record with HOPPER's fuzz bass playing an important role: This is British psychedelia at its best!

Also read, that American Jazz alto saxophonist CHARLIE MARIANO passed away yesterday (November 12, 1923-June 16, 2009).

MARIANO lived in Köln (Cologne) and played with many great musicians, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, Eberhard Weber, and Embryo among others.

From Auckland, New Zealand, comes the one man music project BLACK SAND. 

"I record under the name BLACK SAND. I've been recording my songs for a few years now using a Fostex 8 track and Cool Edit Pro. I'm influenced by a lot of English bands - Primal Scream, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Stone Roses etc. - and a lot of sixties bands, The Creation, The Who, Small Faces etc. - Catch the Sun is the oldest song here, written 3 years ago, while How Does it Feel and Falling Down were written in the last couple of months. - I'm a big music fan and I've always written and recorded for the love of it. 60ies inspired psychedelic pop/rock that has everything fans of that genre will love: dreamy melodies, backward guitars, and a quite relaxed over all atmosphere...To my mind come indeed some songs by PRIMAL SCREEN. Recommended! I'd love to hear more from that guy!

In January I posted the first EP of LOW - FYE from Wales (from 2008); here we've got some new stuff of atmospheric introspective freak-folk - a collection of 2 self-released EPs titled, "Trained Ghosts/Sketches", recorded at the start of 2009. Still I hear a big SYD BARRETT influence (especially the haunting voice!) in that collection of short compositions - no song is longer than 2:35! Impressive, very cool stuff!
